A Highly Recommend Horror Movie: Incantation

I have watched Incantation which is a popular horror movie with my friends recently. The main character of this movie, Ruo Nan, broke into the forbidden area of the cult ritual with her friend and boyfriend six years ago. Their impolite behaviors irritated the sleeping evil spirit. Then, the curse which was spread by the evil spirit began to change Ruo Nan’s life. Many netizens say that Incantation is the most frightening film they have ever watched. I cannot agree with that more. I had a serious psychological consequence after watching this movie. I was afraid of being alone and recalled the most terrifying plots again and again. Why is Incantation a successful horror film? In my opinion, the following two reasons can explain its success.
1. Based on a true story
The plots of Incantation are based on a true news which happened in 2005. The Wu’s family lived in Kaohsiung, and they had a strange religious belief. One day, they considered that they were all possessed by different gods. Then, to exorcise the demon, they began to injure each other. Finally, the eldest daughter was beaten and starved to death. In order to make the plots close to the reality, the director draws the materials from this true family tragedy.
2. Include many Taiwanese local elements
Because Incantation is a local horror movie, it includes many Taiwanese local elements to emphasize the cultural background. In the plots, Ruo Nan sought the professional master’s help to suppress the evil spirit. This master worshipped General Guan Ping which is a common belief in Taiwan. In addition, the extras wore their own clothes when they were acting in the movie. Rather than be an actor, they look like people we see every day. As a result, Incantation is not only a movie but also our daily lives.
